William Carl Harris, Sr., 83, of Keyser, WV passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024 at Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility, Kearneysville, WV after a short stay.
Born on March 4, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late William S. Harris, Jr. and Ruth L. Plietchwait.
William graduated from Damascus High School in 1959 and from Clemson University in 1963 with a degree in Horticulture. He worked for the Maryland State Highway Administration and later for the Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro), retiring in 2003. He also owned and operated several landscape businesses as well as The Jimmie Cone, a small family business in Damascus, Maryland, serving ice cream.
He loved the Lord and had a servant's heart, always willing to help anyone in need. William was a member of the Luther League where he first encountered God on a personal level and developed that relationship over the years, attending several different churches.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren, Noah and Daniel and a daughter-in-law, Kym Harris.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy D. (Miller) Harris, his children, Jeanette Quessenberry of Sykesville, MD, Sarah Inscoe of Greeneville, TN, Willliam Carl Harris of Knoxville, MD, Jay Harris of Keyser, WV, Cynthia Reed of Ijamsville, MD, a sister, Lenna Rae Harris of Nazareth, PA, 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
His great joy in life was taking care of his wife and family as well as enjoying his beloved grandkids. He was always creating and building. He loved tinkering in the garage, running his tractors and chainsaws, and making sure his grandkids had plenty of ice cream.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at 12:00 P.M. at McKee Funeral Home Chapel, Augusta, WV. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until time of service.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, Maryland.
