Walter T. Coon Sr., 91, of Augusta, WV, formerly of Westminster, MD died Sunday, December 28, 2025 at home surrounded by family and friends.
Born December 10, 1934, in Scaggsville, MD, he was the son of the late Harold T Coon and Celeste nee Chalmers Coon. He was the husband of the late Barbara L. nee Heath Coon, his wife of 58 years.
Walter served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956 during the Korean conflict as a QM Maintenance Helper and Motor Officer. He was stationed in Yokohama, Japan, where he also played on the Det. A. Yokohama Eng. Depot. baseball team, winning several trophies. He was awarded the National Defense Service Metal from his service in the U.S. Army.
Walter was a member of the American Legion Hampshire Post 91 and a life member of the Romney Moose Lodge 1371. He especially enjoyed associating with his friends at the Moose.
Walter was a brick layer, cabinet maker, farmer, gardener, plant and tree enthusiast. He built many homes in his life, but most notably are the numerous log cabins he designed and built from rough timber throughout Hampshire Co., WV. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, birding, and feeding his squirrels. He was the rock of the family. A loving husband, dedicated father, and wholehearted grandfather. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family and friends.
Surviving are sons Charles T. Coon and companion Angie Hooper of Westminster, MD; Floyd T. Coon and wife Mary of Augusta, WV; Walter T. Coon Jr. and wife Teri of Westminster, MD; Daughters Debra L. Crawford and husband Bernie of Augusta, WV ; Lorelei J. Janowitz of Augusta, WV; brother, H. Dennis Coon of New Windsor, MD; sister, Linda Ashby of Burlington, WV.; and special caregiver's Dawn Fritz Coon and Chuck Coon Jr.; 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 9 great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was also a mentor to Curtis Heath, Jack Baynar, Herbie Fogus, Brian Koontz, Dianna Coon, Bill Akers, the late Robbie Blankenship, and many others.
He was predeceased by sisters Marjorie Allen, Leona Ashby and Molly Costello; brother David Coon; Son-in-law, Frank Janowitz, Granddaughter, Samantha L. Crawford, Great Grandson, Austin T. Richardson; and granddaughter-in-law, Tracy Coon.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at 1:00 P.M. at McKee Funeral Home Chapel, Augusta, WV with Dennis Voit officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. until time of service. Interment will be in Ebenezer Cemetery with military rites accorded by the U.S. Army.
