Velma Jean Woods, 85, of Augusta, WV passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2025 at Hampshire Center, Romney, WV.

Born on August 12, 1940 in Purgitsville, WV, she was the daughter of the late George Merritt and Alma Sidney (Wilkins) Merritt.

Velma had worked as a dorm counselor for 27 years at the Deaf and Blind School, Romney, WV. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and her family was her pride and joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Kenneth Jr. Woods, in 2014.  Along with her parents, she was also preceded by her brothers, Kenneth, Merlin, Gerald and Gary Merritt.

She is survived by her children, Jennifer Ann Myers (Steve) of Moorefield, WV, Winnie B. Helmick (Kevin) of Moorefield, WV, Alonda R. Westfall (G.A.) of Augusta, WV, 6 grandchildren: Jenna Stine (Cody), Alyssa Westfall, Douglas Largent, Jr. (Toni), Hunter Largent (Marci), Kevin M. Helmick,II (Hanna) and Angela N. Helmick, and 7 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. at McKee Funeral Home Chapel, Augusta, WV with Pastor Dennis Morris officiating.  The family will receive friends from 1pm until time of service.  Interment will be in Green Lane Cemetery, Delray, WV.
