Robert Anderson
Smith
May 21, 1938 — Feb 21, 2025
Augusta
Robert Anderson "Bob" Smith, named in honor of Doctor Anderson, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on May 21, 1938, in Winchester, VA, Bob dedicated his life to his family, community, and the causes he cherished most.
After graduating from Romney High School in 1956, Bob earned his bachelor's degree from West Virginia University, where he also served as a member of the ROTC. From a young age, Bob demonstrated a passion for music, playing the clarinet in the Romney High School band and the West Virginia Association of Future Farmers of America band. A proud graduate, he remained a lifelong supporter of his alma mater and went on to share his passion for learning by teaching science and agriculture at Romney High School, Capon Bridge Junior High School, and Capon Bridge High School.
An avid, lifetime farmer, Bob's connection to the land was matched only by his commitment to community service. His contributions extended beyond the classroom and farm. He was a lifelong member and leader of the 4-H club from the age of 10, and he generously donated his time and resources to several local churches—including Mount Zion Methodist Church, where he was a member. He also attended Shiloh Methodist Church, Malick Church, and the Hanging Rock Church of the Brethren. Bob was also a dedicated member of the Hampshire County Historical Society, serving as its president. He took great pride in researching and preserving the history of one-room schoolhouses in Hampshire and surrounding counties, as well as early cemeteries. Additionally, he was an active member of the Augusta and Hanging Rock Ruritan Clubs—earning the title of Augusta Ruritan Club Member of the Year in 2007—and a proud member of the Farm Bureau.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence L. Smith Sr. and Sadie C. Loy Smith, his brother Clarence L. Smith Jr. (Coralena K. Speelman Smith), and his lifelong love, Paula Nesmith. He is survived by his devoted family: nieces Sue Ann Dowden (Scott Dowden) and Kathy Hipkiss (Wylie Hipkiss); great-nieces Krista Rudolph (Joshua Rudolph) and Trisha Archer (Craig Archer); great-nephew Patrick McCord (Lindsey Toth); along with great-great nephews Seth Rudolph, Luke Rudolph, and Ethan Archer, and great-great niece, Cora Archer.
