Obituary

Richard "Grits" Leo Haines, 91, of Augusta, WV passed away quietly on Sunday, January 18, 2026 surrounded by his family at Hampshire Memorial Long Term Care, Romney, WV.

Born on July 14, 1934 in Higginsville, WV, he was the eldest son of the late Chester and Virginia (Iser) Haines. He was raised by his maternal grandmother and his two favorite uncles.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958, stationed in Germany as an MP assigned to the Highway Patrol Division.  Afterwards, he returned home and started his family.  He was a retired QC inspector from Abex Corp. He lived a long and prosperous life.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Margaret (Myers) Haines, a sister, Ruby Fultz, a brother, Robert Haines and a grandson, Richard Leo Haines II.

He is survived by his children, Rickey Haines of Romney, WV, Marie Haines of Augusta, WV, grandchildren: Timothy Bennett of Front Royal, VA, Joseph Bennett of Augusta, WV, Allena (Haines) Kovak of Winchester, VA, Kayla Whetzel of Slanesville, WV, April Baker of Bunker Hill, WV; great-grandchildren: Aryana Kovak, Natalie Kovak, Nicklas Kovak, Adalyn Kovak, Waylon Harris, and Lucas Bennett; siblings, Betty Straight of Fayettesville, PA, Donald Haines of Orange City, FLA, James Haines of Mercersburg, PA, Jerry Haines of Myrtle Beach, SC, Wanda Haines of Old Town, MD, Roxanna Carpenter of Berkeley Springs, WV and a special friend, Margaret Kesner.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at McKee Funeral Home Chapel, Augusta WV with Pastor Denzil Davis officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior. Interment will be in Beaver Run Cemetery, Burlington, WV. Military rites will be accorded by the U.S. Army.
