John M. Mathias, 82, of Rio, WV passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2025 at Mon Health Medical Center, Morgantown, WV.

Born on March 8, 1943 in Tiffin, Ohio, he was the son of the late M. Brown Mathias and Elsie L. (Wilson) Mathias.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Matthew Mathias.

John was a graduate of Romney High, Class of 1961.  He served in the Army in Vietnam in the 1st Div., 18th Infantry "Swamp Rats."  He retired from GTE. He was a member of the Potomac Highlands Veterans support group, the Ebenezer Lutheran Church, and the VWF.  John was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, landscaper and gardener.  Above all he was devoted to his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janie Bott Mathias, his daughter, Nicole Pownell (Billy) of Romney, WV, his granddaughters, Emily Pownell Bohrer (Branden) of Paw Paw, WV, Sarah Pownell of Romney, WV, and his siblings, Gerald Mathias (Jenny) of Romney, WV, Monty Mathias (Judy) of Maitland, FL, Louise Potter (Keith) of Augusta, WV, Wayne Mathias (Susan) of Stephen's City, VA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, WV with Pastor Tommy George officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior.  Interment will be in Rio Cemetery, Rio, WV. Military rites will be accorded by the U.S. Army.
