JoAnn Hyson, those close to her called her “Gams”, age 90, of Romney, WV passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of fierce love, devotion to family, good food, and a life rooted in hard work and home.

Her 90 years were filled with family, perseverance, and countless memories that will continue to be cherished by those who loved her.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her adoptive parents, Luther Burbank Dennison and Nellie Blanch Saville Dennison and her birthmother, Myrtle Presgraves.

JoAnn grew up in Fort Ashby, WV on Dennison Hollow Road, where the roots of her strength, independence, and devotion to family first took hold.

She is survived by her children, Tammy Hyson Buckley and Harold Hyson, Jr. and his wife, Betsy, as well as her daughter-in-law, Donna Hyson.

She was preceded in death by her beloved children, Steve Hyson, Debra Smith, and Donna Shaffer, as well as her infant granddaughter, Nicole Corbin.

JoAnn’s memory will also be cherished by her grandchildren, Kelly Hyson, Jeremy Buckley and wife Stephanie, Dana Cook and husband, Mike, Shawn Hyson and wife Janelle, Derek Hyson, Tasha Hyson, Chase Hyson, and Cam Hyson, along with her many great-grandchildren, including three who held a special place in her heart: Tavis, Ryder and Remington Buckley. Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren were her pride and joy. She also leaves behind her devoted dog, Bugsy-her bodyguard, best friend and faithful companion-who remained by her side and watched over her until the end.

JoAnn’s working life reflected the same strength and dedication she gave to her family. She began her career at the Pioneer Restaurant and later worked at the Kinney Shoe Factory, the Deaf and Blind School, and Abex before retiring from General Electric in Winchester, VA.

JoAnn made her home in Romney, WV on the Jesse and Frances Buckbee farm, where she raised her family and found lasting joy in farm life. Jesse and Frances became more than friends; they became family and a steady foundation in her life. Jo Ann was deeply loved, and the home she created there became the heart of many treasured memories.

Nothing came between Jo Ann and her children. She loved them fiercely and protected them with the heart of a true “momma bear.” Some in Romney affectionately called her family “Josie and the Pussycats” because she was so often surrounded by her girls and the special love they shared. Her boys, of course, could do no wrong- a perfect example of a mother’s unconditional love.

JoAnn was a wonderful cook and anyone fortunate enough to enjoy her homemade macaroni and cheese could attest that it was unforgettable. She also took great pride in her flower gardens; though modest in size, they were lovingly kept and pristine until she was no longer able to tend them. Her family will deeply miss her cooking, her flowers, her strength, and the love she poured into the people and places that mattered most.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 16, 2026 at 2:00 P.M. at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, WV with Pastor Denzil Davis officiating. Interment will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney, WV.The family will receive friends on Saturday, 6-8pm, at the funeral home.
