Obituary

Jack "Jerry" Summers, II of Charleston, WV passed away on Monday, March 11, 2024 at his residence.

Jerry  was born in Charleston on Dec. 8, 1942, to Mary Elizabeth and Jack C. Summers, Sr. In third grade, he decided to become a chemist. After graduation in 1961 from Stonewall Jackson High School, he went to WVU where he graduated in 1964 with a B.S. in Chemistry. He also met and married his wife of 62 years, Ramona D. Wilson. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Florida in 1968. A proud West Sider, although his career took him around the world, he never lost that identity.

He earned 26 patents over his long career and worked for a variety of Fortune 500 companies. He helped to develop the first automotive catalytic converters while working for G.M. in the 1970s.

Throughout his career, he hired and developed scientific talent. In 1996, he started a placement firm for scientists and engineers and moved it to his hometown, Charleston, in 1999. He also provided consulting services to firms around the world. His final position was with MATRIC.

He became a Christian in October 1964 and was active in several churches, including River Ridge Church. He was also a member of the Sherlock Holmes Society and active in Republican politics.

He is survived by his wife, Ramona "Wendy" Summers, and five surviving children, three grandchildren, and his brother, James Summers.

Many thanks to his amazing caregivers and to the hospice staff who made it possible for him to stay at home.
